The Indian Institutes of Technology-more commonly known as the IITs are India’s premier training institutes for engineering in various domains.
The IITs are autonomous institutes that are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 that recognizes them as institutes of National Importance in imparting quality education in the field of engineering. These IITs are joined with the other IITs through a common IIT council that takes care of their administration.
Students plan for various specializations in the beginning based on the interest like Computer Science, Aeronautics, Mechanical, Electronics or Civil Engineering etc.

There are 21 IITs in all in India, located all over the country -Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mandi, Mumbai, Patna, Ropar, Roorkee and Varanasi. IITs in India offer a host of courses, from BTech to Ph.D. to all their applicants.
The admission to IITs at the undergraduate level is through the JEE examination that is held at two levels, JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. Every year lakhs of students try their luck for admission to IITs through the JEE. The admissions for the graduate-level program that offers MTech degree are through the GATE examination- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.
The IITs have also started offering admissions to students under various other programs like Ph.D., MBA, MSc. in Physics, Engineering, Math, and Chemistry. The admissions to these programs happen through Common Admission Test (CAT), Joint Admission Test to M.Sc. (JAM) and Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED).
