Let’s first look at the fixed expenses (per annum):

  • Coaching fee: The coaching fee depends on the standard of an institution. It ranges from Rs. 50000 to Rs.150000. If a student chooses a prominent institute having the veteran staff and incredible infrastructure, therefore, set the coaching budget more than Rs. 100000.
  • Hostel or PG Expenses: The hostel or PG cost depends on the student’s choice. The yearly cost ranges from Rs.50000 to Rs. 200000 depending on the standard of living.
  • Mess charges: Again, the mess charges are not the same. It ranges from Rs. 20000 to Rs. 70000 depending on the facilities.

Now look at the Variable expenses (per annum):

  • Transportation cost: The transportation cost is not fixed. It depends on the student’s choice. If they take hostel facility which may be on campus, then cost will be zero. If they take PG which is far away from the college, then the transportation cost will range between Rs. 6000 to Rs. 50000 and sometimes more.
  • Household items cost: While staying in a hostel or PG, the household items will require that would cost between Rs. 3000 to Rs. 20000 depending on the living standard.
  • Entertainment cost: The entertainment cost such as cafes, restaurants, travelling, movies, etc.  will be Rs.0 to Rs.150000 depending on the student's usage.

Let’s assemble the total cost in term of minimum and maximum:
  • Minimum expenses required to study in IIT: Fixed Rs. (50000+50000+20000) and Variable Rs. (6000+3000+0). The total is Rs. 128000
  • Maximum expenses required to study in IIT: Fixed Rs. (150000+200000+70000) and Variable Rs. (50000+20000+150000). The total is Rs. 640000

So the annual expense for living and studying can range from Rs 128000 to Rs 640000.

In general, the IIT fee system can’t judge accurately as it has a number of reimbursements, exemptions, and concessional fees for particular target groups.

Because of these, exemptions, in FY12, the average net collection per undergraduate student is only 50% of the average fee of Rs. 50,000 p.a. In brief, if this system of fee and exemption will sustain, in future, fees keep hiking up to yield the expected growing percentage of the working costs.

Moreover, the top 20 private engineering institutes in India offer fee between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh per student per annum. The fact is that these institutions increase the fee structure every year.

There is no particular limitation of a fee charged by the IITs. It increases as the year goes. But there is compensation for some classes who can study in IITs even paying the less amount of fee:

  • SC/ST category: The students come in SC/ST category is considered to waive off their fee around 22%.
  • General Category or others: If you fall in a general category or others, you can avail 25% of the fee waive if your parent's annual income is less than Rs. 4.5 lakh.

Moreover, in some IITs, no fee charged is demanded from the SC/ST students and for non-creamy layer OBC students. Some of the prominent IITs offer scholarships and tuition fees reimbursement to its top post-graduate and PhD students.

Hence, the cost of JEE depends on the institution, living standard, and other basic needs of the students. It is up to the student how much he will going to spend in a year.

I am studying in class 12th in Qatar. Should I postpone JEE preparation for next year after giving 12th exams?

    1. Hi MAqsood, Most important thing is let your child enjoy his childhood as he can prepare for JEE Mains after his 10th. Ask him to clear his basics till 10th class and then prepare for JEE Mains. Apart from that you can go through Pearson IIT Foundation series Physics, Maths and Chemistry for class 7 to 10.
