Admissions in IISERs & IIST through JEE Advanced:

High School engineering aspirants in India & abroad are always competing for admissions in IITs & few other well-versed Engineering Institutes of India.

For Indian or NRI Students or even Foreign Candidates who clear the JEE Advanced (an engineering entrance exam), their first option is to try for seats in IITs.

The next option of colleges in India that accept JEE Advanced Rank for admissions is the IISERs, IIST, IISc, RGIPT. These are very reputed engineering colleges of India & every year, only a limited number of students with good JEE Advanced Rank get selected in these.

In this article, we will elaborate on admissions in IISERs & IIST.

NRI Students' Admissions in IISERs & IIST through JEE Advanced Rank:

Especially NRI, PIO, OCI Students have to face really tough competition with the Indian Students (for JEE Mains & Advanced) in order to take admissions in these colleges.

For NRI, PIO, OCI Students there is no quota to take admissions in IISERs & IIST hence they must clear JEE Advanced in order to take admissions in IISER & IIST.

If they are not able to clear JEE Advanced, they can take admissions in NITs, IIITs, CFTIs & SPAs using their JEE Mains Rank through NRI Quota under DASA / CIWG Scheme. These are well-reputed colleges as well.

Now let’s get back to IISERs & IIST. Here is some important information about these reputed Engineering Colleges of India:

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER):

The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) is one of the reputed institutions in India that intake students based on their JEE Rank (A.I.R).

They take admissions for 5-year BS-MS degree programs at its seven participating institutes. Hence, care must be taken while making this choice.  The participating institutes are:

  • Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal

  • Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali

  • Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune

  • Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata

  • Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram

  • Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Tirupati

  • Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Berhampur

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) Admission Process:

The admissions take place through three channels namely Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), JEE Advanced, and State and Central Board (SCB).

Candidates are allowed to apply for all three channels but they must fulfill the eligibility criteria of each channel they are applying.

The SCB channel students must take an IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) for admission but the two other channels give you direct admission.

We will consider the channel through JEE in this article.

For the JEE, the student must have cleared both JEE Mains as well as JEE Advanced. The All India Rank (AIR) will be considered as the deciding factor in securing your seat.

The application form for this process will be made available online on the IISER website. 50 % of the seats available in these institutions are reserved for JEE and KVPY candidates only.

The eligibility criteria for entry into IISERs is dependant on the channel that you pick.

For the JEE Advanced channel, Candidates in the General category securing a rank within 10000 in the Common Rank List (CRL) of JEE Advanced are eligible to apply.

All Indian nationals, NRI, PIO, and OCI category candidates can apply to IISER provided they satisfy the above-mentioned eligibility criteria.

These institutes provide admission to approximately 1125 seats. The allocation of these seats will depend on their choice of participating institute during counseling.

In order to register online & submit the application, the candidates must create an account on the IISER website with a valid email ID.

Around the month of July, the counseling process begins for IISER. Separate counseling will be conducted for each of the three modes of admission and there will be separate seat allotment lists as well.

This process may vary every year and hence you must check out these details on their official website constantly.

Depending upon the number of seats available, the rank of the candidate in the merit list, and the choice of other candidates who have scored higher ranks, the seats get filled up.

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST):

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) is an ISRO affiliated Institute that offers bachelors courses in three categories:

  • B.Tech. in Avionics

  • B.Tech. in Aerospace Engineering

  • Dual Degree (B.Tech. and M.S./M.Tech.)

Situated in Thiruvananthapuram, it begins its admission process in May every year.

This admission will be done on the basis of the JEE Advanced Rank. No separate entrance examination is conducted by this university hence all seats are open to students scoring well in JEE Advanced. In order to get admission here, you must register on the official website of this institute and fill out details about their JEE Advanced details.

The allocation of seats will be done according to the rank list, preferences selected, and availability of seats. Following this, the college call in candidates for a counseling process.

The allotment generally takes place in the Fourth week of June to the Fourth week of July.

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) Eligibility Criteria:

Before beginning, one must make sure that the candidate fulfills the eligibility criteria set by the institute.

NRI students who clear JEE Advanced are also eligible to apply for admission in this Institute. Inability to meet the determined eligibility criteria will lead to a candidate’s inability to participate in the admission. The criteria are given below in a gist.

  1. Candidates must be Indian citizens. NRI Students are eligible to apply as well.

  2. Candidates must have passed a 12th standard exam or its equivalent. Candidates belonging to the general category must have scored at least 75 % aggregate marks and candidates belonging to SC/ST should have scored at least 65% aggregate marks

  3. Candidates must clear the JEE Advanced exam with at least 20 % marks. (There is a reduction in this cutoff based on the category you belong to. This can be checked on the official website.)

If all of these conditions are met, you may proceed with the application procedure. First, you must log in and register for admission on the online application form made available on its official website. This requires you to add your roll number of JEE Advanced and Date of birth.

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) Application Process:

Once the application is available you have to fill in all the required personal and academic information such as your address, email ID, scores in JEE Main and JEE Advanced, etc.

During this process, you are also asked to enter your preference of which course you would like to study. This is done with an order of preference that may affect your seat allocation during admission.

After rechecking if all data has been entered correctly, the application fee which is non-refundable must be completed.

The application fee is INR 600 for General and OBC candidates and INR 300 for Female and SC/ST/PWD candidates.

After the entire process is complete, you just get to sit back and wait. A rank list is released by IIST online where your JEE Advanced Rank is taken into consideration and seats are allocated.

In case of a tie between two or more candidates, scores in Mathematics is given precedence. If the tie is still unresolved, the score in Physics is given precedence.

In rare cases where the issue is still not resolved, the JEE Main score is taken into account. This list is however subject to reservations depending on the category you belong to.

After this, the final list of candidates is published on the website and the candidates will have to make the fee payment in order to secure their seats.

This is considered an acceptance of the seat and they can proceed with document verification at the centers.

If not paid on time, the seat may be allocated to some other students who may have been placed on a waiting list.
