In India itself, there are multiple entrance examinations or admission processes. These are conducted either by a body run by the central government, the state government, or a private body run by the respective university.
The eligible candidates apply for the entrance examination through either an online or offline application form. The entire application process is available through the internet, rather than offline due to the pandemic of 2020.
Application Process for NRIs
The Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme is a popular method of admission into engineering colleges for NRI (including CIWG) students.
Each year, one of the participating institutes is in charge of managing DASA admissions. The assigned institute of 2020 is the National Institute of Technology Surathkal, Karnataka.
The list of participating institutes is available on the official website of DASA.
Apply for JEE and Other Examinations
Eligible Indian students who aspire to pursue an engineering course have to fill application for entrance exams. The most popular exam in the country is the Joint Entrance Examination.
There are multiple engineering entrance examinations in the country conducted by different states, such as MHT-CET in Maharashtra, GUJCET in Gujarat, COMEDK UGET in Karnataka, and TJEE in Tripura.
Candidates must apply for these exams before the last date specified by the respective conducting authorities. NRI candidates are also allowed to appear for JEE.
For JEE, candidates have to register themselves on the JEE website/NTA website. To apply for the examination, they need to fill in all the details and upload scanned documents that are asked in the application form.
To submit this form, the candidate needs to make a payment through the various options provided such as Debit card, Credit card, or Net banking. After making the payment, the candidate will have to download the confirmation/acknowledgement page.

Application Process for Engineering Colleges in India
Step 1- Appear for the exam: The eligible candidates who have applied for the entrance exams have to reach the centers assigned to them, and appear for the two or three-hour long exam. The exam is either computer-based or written, and the questions are MCQ-based or answerable numerically. The question paper is a mix of questions of three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Candidates have to take the admit card or hall ticket, which is allotted a few days before the exam.
Step 2- Wait for the Result: The results for the exams usually do not take a long time to be released. In the meantime, the conducting authority releases the answer key for the question paper. Using this answer key, students can estimate their scores before the actual results are released.
Step 3- Post-results, stay ready for counselling: After receiving a good score in the entrance examination, the candidate has to apply for counseling, wherein the Counselling authority decides which college and branch the candidate should be placed in.
Step 4- Applying to DASA CIWG for NRI students: The NRI candidates can apply to DASA to secure admission in its participating institutes. It must be noted that all colleges are not affiliated with DASA. They may or may not have a separate quota for NRI candidates.
Step 5- Choose your college: The allotment is done by the authorities based on counselling rounds, and then the candidates need to apply to the colleges and branches as per their choice and rank. In this way, some candidates who have secured the highest ranks can apply to the better colleges and branch, whereas the candidates with a lower rank have fewer choices.
Eligibility Criteria to Particular Colleges
- IIT: The person must have secured at least 75% in their 10+2 examinations. They must have had the abovementioned score in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, any language, and any other subject. Any IIT aspirant needs to appear for JEE Main and JEE Advanced, both.
- NIT: Similar to it, to be an eligible candidate, the person must have secured 75% in the Class 12th exam, which needs to include the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, any language, and any other subject.
- BITS: The person needs to have passed their Class 12th examination in the same subjects as mentioned above. Since BITS is a private university, they conduct their examination called BITSAT (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test).
- VIT: The candidate must have passed class 12th board examination, or anything equivalent recognized by the university, in the same subjects as above, with a minimum aggregate of 60%. The university conducts the VITEEE (Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Exam) for the engineering aspirants.
- DASA: The NRI candidates who wish to apply through the DASA scheme must check their eligibility. The candidate needs to have passed class 12th examinations (or equivalent exams). Also, they need to have scored 1800 in SAT Subject Tests, which are Mathematics Level 2, Physics, and Chemistry.
Required Documents for Engineering College Admissions
There are a few documents that are necessary to be uploaded at the time of applying and admission. Some of them are as follows:
- Passport Size photo of the candidate
- Signature of the candidate
- Class 10th Passing Certificate
- Class 12th Passing Certificate
- Caste Certificate (if applicable)
- Wards of Defence Personnel certificate (if applicable)
- PwD Certificate and Medical Certificate (if applicable)
- ID proof issued by Government Authority (such as Aadhar card, PAN Card, Passport, etc)
