Engineering Admissions in India for NRIs with & without DASA/CIWG:
Getting admitted to engineering colleges in India is a hectic process as there are thousands and lakhs of applicants for a few numbers of seats. The process becomes even more cumbersome for students living abroad. The students living abroad fall into three categories as
- Person of Indian Origin (PIO) are a non-Indian resident who is given a 15-year visa but it has been discontinued later.
- Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) are those non-Indian citizens who are given lifetime visa to live and work in India with a minimum possible amount of restrictions.
- A non-Resident Indian (NRI) is a legal citizen of India living in another country due to work and other unavoidable reasons.
The students falling into the category of NRI, PIO, and OCI can get admission into engineering colleges in India through the DASA scheme.
DASA is a short form for Direct Admission of Students Abroad. DASA is a scheme launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India for admission of NRI into the premier Institutions of India.
The admission under the DASA scheme into UG and PG educational programs for the year 2023 is coordinated by NIT Warangal, India.
There are a few colleges that offer admission into Under Graduate programs in Engineering/ Architecture/ Planning to the NRI students under the DASA scheme. There are about 31 NITs, 11 IIITs, 3 SPAs, and 16 CFTIs under the DASA scheme.
Will you be applying for DASA / CIWG 2023 or years after that? You must then prepare for JEE Main.

The students living in Middle Eastern countries are also eligible for the CIWG scheme. CIWG is a short form for Children of Indian Workers in the Gulf. There are 8 Countries that fall into this scheme i.e. Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Iran, and Iraq.
The students falling into this category are required to submit their residential proof in the form of a parent working in a Gulf/Parent Visa/Parents work permit/Certificate from the organization parent has been working for.
The one-third of the admission quota is given to Children of Indian Workers in the Gulf (CIWGs) and the two-thirds of the admission quota is given to Non-CIWG scheme (UG students from the rest of the world). There are about 2350 admissions done in India under the DASA scheme.
OTE- the UG students are eligible for the DASA scheme when their parents are living in abroad for more than 5 years. Otherwise, the students are not eligible for admission via this scheme.
The scheme has simplified the process of B.Tech admission in NITs, IIITs, SPAs, and other centrally funded and Premier Technical Institutes of India other than the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs).
Loved the institutes and if you fall under DASA/CIWG then refer to this DASA Guide to get to know more. This guide illustrates everything on DASA.
