How Merit List is prepared for DASA CIWG Schemes | NRI Student's Guide
The major factor that helps determine the Merit List / Closing Rank for DASA & CIWG Quota admissions are explained below:
As clearly stated in the DASA & CIWG Schemes that 15% seats in each of the DASA participating Colleges are reserved for the DASA Applicants. Out of these 15%, 1/3rd of the DASA reserved seats (i.e. 5% of the total seats in each college) are reserved for the CIWG Category.
The competition here is only for the default 10% non-CIWG & 5% CIWG seats. So if more students apply for DASA Scheme, the cutoff will be much higher than compared to a scenario when fewer students apply for DASA in any particular year. You can simply put it as – It is based on Percentile or Rank. It is not based on a constant score like SAT Scores for admission in US Universities.
The merit list / cutoff for DASA has nothing to do with the cutoff for general quota in NITs, IIITs, CFTIs & SPAs.
Note: If seats in CIWG category are left vacant by the end of DASA Counselings, then those vacant CIWG seats are transferred to non-CIWG Quota. Those seats are then alloted to non-CIWG applicants but the rules and Fees remain the same for non-CIWG/DASA applicants.

Merit List for NRI Students in Middle East choosing the CIWG Quota
If you take a look at the previous years’ SAT Cutoffs & closing ranks for CIWG category, you will realize that NRIs from Gulf Countries face more challenges.
The cutoff for CIWG category is generally seen to be higher than non-CIWG cutoffs. This is due to the 5% of reserved seats & large number of students competing for CIWG seats.
On the other hand non-CIWG category are left with 10% of the reserved seats and the number of non-CIWG Applicants may still be slightly greater than number of CIWG applicants yet its cutoff is usually lower because of more number of seats.
Hence, it is all about competition & number of applicants. This way, the cutoff is different every year.
Note: CIWG applicants are also eligible to apply under the non-CIWG Category but vice-versa isn’t true.
Note: CIWG eligible NRIs are from the following countries:
-
UAE
-
Oman
-
Saudi Arabia (KSA)
-
Kuwait
-
Bahrain
-
Qatar
-
Iran
-
Iraq
