JEE Preparation – Time to Complete

How much time is needed to complete JEE preparation?

JEE preparation asks for dedicated and continuous effort on the students’ part. A uniform timetable, with focus on every single topic that needs to be done, leads to a desirable score. One should have ample time for revision of all the topics covered and for working towards their speed and accuracy. Based on the time available to students for their JEE preparation, the students can be divided into 4 major categories as discussed below-

  1. STUDENTS WHO START THEIR PREPARATION AS EARLY AS THE 9TH OR 10TH GRADE:

Students who start their JEE preparation as early as the end of their 9th grade or the 10th grade have the maximum time to their benefit. They can easily begin working towards the grade-specific topics that are covered in the JEE examination during their school year and then move to the slightly difficult topics by the third term, preferably, January of the year in which they appear for their 10th-grade examination. The first priority of such students should be to ace their JEE specific topics first and they should continuously work towards a revision of the same from time to time.

  1. STUDENTS WHO BEGIN THEIR PREPARATION IN THE 11TH GRADE:

Ideally, the students who begin their preparation at the beginning of the 11th grade have the most advantage to themselves. They should target to complete their JEE specific syllabus by the month of December in which they enter the 11th grade. They should then use the next few weeks to revise and practice the syllabus covered. They can then concentrate on their school examination and thereafter move towards their grade 12th JEE specific topics. The key here is to make sure they do a lot of practice and revision so that they do not forget concepts done during the course of the year. Provided they are able to complete their JEE specific 11th-grade syllabus by December, i.e. in 9 months, they can aim to complete the rest of their JEE syllabus by November of the following year (that is the year in which they enter their grade 12). They can then use up the next few weeks again for practice and revision and to work towards their speed and accuracy. They can then concentrate on their board examination and revise for JEE simultaneously. Once the board exams are over, they can concentrate on their JEE mains again.

  1. STUDENTS WHO BEGIN THEIR PREPARATION IN THE 12TH GRADE:

The students who begin their JEE preparation in their 12th grade clearly have much lesser time than the students who fall into the two categories stated above. However, for such students, it is essential to speed up to complete their syllabus. In the span of one year, they have to cover their grade 12th JEE specific syllabus, revise their 11th-grade JEE specific topics and prepare for their boards. These students should try to extract as much as they can from their classes and coaching and utilize all time that they have for their revision. They should aim to complete JEE preparation by January first week so that they have enough time to prepare for their Board examination. Since topics would be the same, they may get back to their JEE preparation as soon as they get free from their boards.

  1. FOR STUDENTS WHO DROP A YEAR FOR JEE:

Students who drop a year to give their devoted attempt at JEE have a complete year to prepare for their JEE. Such students should aim to begin their syllabus by June and complete their JEE preparation by January end so that they have over the next two months for revision and practice. Since these aspirants have complete February and March with them, they can easily prepare for their JEE Mains and Advanced. They also have enough time to do more mock tests and thorough revision.

In all the above situations, irrespective of when a student begins his preparation for JEE, it is important to make a schedule that involves regular study and practice. They should wisely choose their coaching and should also concentrate on their school routines. Always remember that a favorable result depends mostly on the effort put in by the students.
