Documents Needed to Apply for US Universities

The numbers of Indian (NRI) students seeking admissions to US Universities are increasing day by day, especially for bachelors and masters engineering degree. You need to be extra careful in meeting the standards and norms laid down by each University. The documents to be submitted are crucial since there will be no chance at all for correction later on.

Your visiting websites of different universities in the US is possibly the first step.

 

Is there Uniform Application Available to Apply for all US Universities?

First and foremost, you need an application form either online or hardcopy directly from the University. School or College as the case may be.  There is no uniform application available to suit for all the universities. You need to visit the websites of each University and download the relevant form. (Sometimes it is the department of the University who admit the students). The requirement of each university shall vary as well.

List of Documents Required Applying to US Universities 

The list of documents that Indian (NRI) students must be ready with:

1.   DD/Bank check for Application fee by online remittance (through Net banking, Credit cards, etc. If you could not pay online the application can be paid by Demand Draft or Bankers Cheque.

2.   Minimum one recommendation letter from your teachers of the school you attended for the qualifying examination, only in the prescribed form.

3.   SAT/GRE/TOEFL/GMAT/IELTS mark/score sheet

4.   Transcripts of the qualifying examination if only applicable

5.   Secondary School Leaving Certificate /10th standard or Equivalent Certificate

6.   12th standard or Equivalent certificates wherever it is applicable. (Minimum  requirement for admission is 12 years in school)

7.   Statement of Purpose (SOP) indicating your aim in life

8.   Copies of the first and last pages of your passport which can be uploaded in most of the Universities’ websites

9.   Details and certificates of your extracurricular activities

10. Paper presentations

  • Dramatics
  • Elocution
  • School position like captain or Secretary
  • Sports/ games
  • Symposiums etc.)
  • Scholarships

11. Any Other documents you think worth presenting.

12. Some universities insist on an essay written by the candidate

 

Key Points to Note:

  • Even though you can apply to the universities without taking tests like SAT, ACT, GRE, etc., many Universities do not budge from their norms. SAT is the highly accepted qualifying examinations to most of the US Universities.
  • You have to produce the original scores in these qualifying examinations during the final processing of the application.
  • The rough time frame by which you have to apply for the US Universities is roughly 5 to 9 months earlier than the application deadline dates. But applying say one year ahead is also common.
  • The earlier you start rolling the application, your chances of winning scholarships are better.
  • Some Universities do allow application even after the deadline.
  • The Grade point Average (GPA) is the unit of measurement of your overall caliber in getting admission to the US Universities. Your transcripts, scores in the qualifying examinations, marks for extracurricular activities, evaluation of SOP, etc. are the ultimate pass for you to get through the gates of the University as a fresher.
  • SAT, GRE, TOEFL, GRE, MCAT, LSAT, GMAT are the standard requirements most of the Universities insist.

 

Form I-20:

The form I-20 to be submitted along with the application is basically spells out your eligibility to obtain an F-1 visa. As a bona fide student, you are supposed to have met the admission criteria and plan to complete the full term as well as you have good financial backing.
