About IELTS
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test of English language proficiency. It is jointly managed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, British Council and IDP Education Australia. IELTS is accepted by most Australian, British, Canadian, Irish, New Zealand and South African colleges and by an increasing number of colleges in the USA.
IELTS tests the ability to listen, read, write and speak in English.
The Characteristics of IELTS:
- The Reading and Writing Section is offered in two formats i.e. 1) Academic Module 2) General Training Module. The Academic Module is to be taken by students planning to pursue higher education. General Training Module is to be taken by students planning to complete secondary education or immigrate to Australia, Canada & New Zealand. The Listening and Speaking Section is the same for all students.
- The students have to indicate on the Test Registration Form which Module they are taking i.e. Academic Module or General Training Module.
- The first three Modules- Listening, Reading and Writing- must be completed in one day. The Speaking Module may be taken, at the discretion of the test centre, either seven days before or after the other three modules.
- Different types of questions are asked, some questions are multiple choice whereas some are to be answered directly on the worksheet provided.
Score Scale of IELTS
IELTS is scored on a nine band scale. Each Band corresponds to different English competence. The Band Scores are in either whole or half Bands. Band scores are used for each language sub-skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking). The Band Scale ranges from 1 to 9 as follows,
Band 9 – Expert User
Band 8 – Very Good User
Band 7 – Good User
Band 6 – Competent User
Band 5 – Modest User
Band 4 – Limited User
Band 3 – Extremely Limited User
Band 2 – Intermittent User
Band 1 – Non User
Band 0 – Did not attempt
