Is the SAT easier than Indian Entrance Examinations?
Even though the question sounds simple, the answer is not as simple as the perspective and aptitude vary drastically. As per the Indian (NRI) students who attend both SAT and IIT JEE Main examinations confirm the difficulty in comparison.
SAT
Essentially SAT comprises of two papers. While SAT I assesses proficiency in the English language, SAT II goes deep into Science and Mathematics. There is no negative marking and as such getting full or near to full marks in SAT II is a cake walk.
SAT I may be tough for an average Indian student. The essay and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW), is bit baffling especially for those not having English as their mother tongue. To those coming from English medium schools, however, it may be easier comparatively.
SAT Vs JEE
SAT has an almost universal acceptance whereas CAT or JEE has relevance only to India. Getting a good score in SAT would see you through entering the top Universities in the world in engineering stream.
If you are planning to pursue your education in India, better concentrate in the Indian competitive examinations. The preparation and syllabus for SAT with Indian competitive exams are not that easily comparable.
SAT is Holistic in its Approach
SAT is looking on a holistic approach whereas JEE is purely academic. In other words, the SAT would give preference to language (American English), essay, CV, etc. While a good score in JEE will get you admission in IIT for sure, a good score alone does not ensure your seat in the premier engineering institutions in the US. Indian students stumble often on the American English questions.
Your Background
Coming to the Mathematics and Science subjects, any good 12th-grade student from India could crack the SAT easily. Additional preparation in JEE would make the journey easier. As said earlier for SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) the approach is holistic and would reflect on your personality. JEE calls for many formulae and equations by heart whereas the SAT provides them in the question paper.
Statistics
Roughly 3 lakh students go abroad every year for higher education from India alone, And over 20 lakh students write SAT from 175 countries out of which at least 13,000 are from India.
If you are inclined to a lot of reading and writing and keen on going abroad for your Engineering UG course, SAT is the exam you should take. Your good academic background in the 12th would help. In case you are more into academic, a thorough preparation/ coaching in the JEE should find your entry IITs confidentially.
