How Long is the SAT With Extra Time?

The exact duration of the SAT Exam for Indian (NRI) students along with the breaks is four hours and seven minutes. This entails all sections of the exam i.e. Writing Test, Reading Test, Language Test, Math Calculator Test, Math No Calculator Test and the optional Essay. The breaks are also part of this time duration. So, basically SAT exam is not a short exam. It is pretty long and you need to be alert and active at all times.

Breaks in SAT Exam

The SAT Exam has three breaks in all. The first break is for a period of 10 minutes and this is after the Reading section of the exam. The second break spans duration of 5 minutes and this is after your Math No Calculator Section. In both these breaks the student is allowed to use the restroom or go out to eat some snack.

The final break is just for a period of 2 minutes and this break takes place right after Math Calculator section. In this break you are not allowed to leave the exam room for just about anything. You will have to sit inside the hall though you can use this time to relax a bit.

Now if the student does not opt to sit for Essay section, the SAT exam without the essay part ends in a span of three hours, 15 minutes. The student is allowed to leave right after Math Calculator section of the exam. So, this is little faster than the exam with Essay section.

How Can You Make the Most Out of the SAT Exam Breaks?

The main aim of the breaks within the SAT exam is that the student gets time to recharge and refresh. Tiredness should not mar performance of a student so this is the reason these breaks are planned. You can eat a light snack to replenish your energy. You can even use the restroom in case there is a need.

Try to eat enry dense food rather than snacking on junk food. Drink water so that you are not dehydrated. It is tough to maintain focus for a very long duration of time and if you eat foods such as bananas, energy bars etc you will definitely feel good. Also during the break just move around a little as sitting for longer durations will make you feel dull.

Keep in mind that the second break is relatively shorter so in case if you need to use the restroom, do it then otherwise you will not get time later on. The third break which is just for 2 minutes does not let you leave the room, so if you wish to use the washroom you will not be able to do so in any circumstance.

SAT Exam is like a speed marathon where you have to make the most of the situation. It is timed exam where you need to use proper presence of mind lest you performance will be compromised drastically.
