In case you are in Grade 10 and you wish to take SAT/ACT exam keep that in mind that this exam is primarily for the sophomores. Some students think that raw test score from 10th grade can be used to determine their future score; however this piece of information isn’t totally accurate and we will elaborate about it in later part of this essay. We all are aware that Indian/NRI students learn a lot between Grade 10 and 11 so this also reflects in their SAT scores. 

The knowledge of a student in Grade 11 is any day more than that of a student in Grade 10. It is expected that a rise of 40 points is possible per section in SAT exam and for ACT it is 2 points per section. This is a huge rise by any parameters. 10th Grade SAT/ACT Score Distribution:

Score for SAT test for average 10th Grader is roughly 460 per section. For the ACT exam this score stands at 18 per section. 

The standard deviation for SAT is 100 points per section and for ACT it is 6 points. This is actually a 50% percentile performance. For 95% percentile performance ACT Composite score is 31 and SAT Section score is 660. Basically, if you have composite score of  24 on ACT and 560 for each section of SAT exam you are hitting above average mark for a 10th grader.

And this is definitely a good thing. In short what score you get in Grade 10, it will predict your score in Grade 11 in a big way. So, you can work your way to a good score in Grade 11 if you begin preparing hard in Grade 10 only. But now the question arises how you should prepare in Grade 10.

How Should 10th Graders Prepare for SAT/ACT Exam?

Any exam necessitates a lot of hard work and focus from part of the student. There are lots of books which can guide your way through the exam but a lot depends on motivation and concentration level of a student. The student needs to make up his mind whether he or she should start preparing in Grade 10 should he/ she waits till Grade 11. 

Once you are sure that you want to start in Grade 10 buy various books which will help you crack the exam. These books will train you in different as aspects of the exam. Pay lot of attention to the Practice Tests. Check the official SAT and ACT practice tests. You can download then and try to do them at your own pace.
