Impressive Extracurricular Activities for Your College Application

Understanding the college admission process at times can be difficult and if you're someone who's not a resident of that country, then for sure you need some guidance through it. Over the years there's been a increase in the number of applications being submitted by Indian NRI Students. Parents migrate to different countries for work, but the studies of their children get hampered due to the movement.

Now, being an Indian NRI Student, you would think that your grades and test scores are the only things that college admission officers look at. Sorry to say but you're wrong. Apart from the grades, Extracurricular activities play a very important role in your college application process. It helps admission officers to know more about you and your capabilities.

This article will help you know more about how to strategize and pick activities that will make biggest impact on your application.

Some of the Impressive Extracurricular Activities:

There's a basic misconception among Indian NRI students that getting involved a sports activity or any activity that’s related to it would get them an easy ticket to college admission. One thing I really want to make clear is that, colleges do not care which activities you choose to do. Their main goal is to understand you and your personality. Basically your extracurricular activities are a window to know more about your skills.

You must always pick activities that show the below mentioned traits of yours:

Passion:

It is advisable that the extracurricular activities are a reflection of you and most importantly what you care about. With years of experience at hand, Admissions Officers can usually tell the activities you chose were chosen to just pad out your resume or whether you really care for them. By focusing on a couple activities and dedicating a significant amount of time to them, you can show how passionate you are about it.

Leadership:

Leadership is a very important trait which colleges look out for when assessing your extracurricular activities, as they are always looking to educate and groom the leaders of tomorrow. People who portray this trait are always at the forefront of the change and are the ones to take on the challenges head-on.

Impact:

Through the activities you chose, you can show colleges that you are a type of person who gives more than 100% in whatever you do. Colleges want people who are looking to change the world through their activities and who strive to bring in an impactful change via the activity.

According to me, the perfect mix of extracurricular activities is to always have:

  • Academic Activity: Academic activity is an important activity, as it’s directly related to what you plan to study in college. Eg: If you wish to get into journalism, then you can be a part of school newspaper
  • Community Service Activity: Community service activity is one which allows you to volunteer to work with people or for a cause. Eg: Tutoring students after school to better their scores
  • Personality Activity: It's something that you do solely because you’re passionate about it, no matter if it does not relate to you professionally or academically

To Summarize:

The above combination of activities is a good place to start if you’re confused on what activities to pick.

However, the main goal behind choosing any activity is to make a commitment to yourself, to show leadership in the activity, and working towards making an impact!
