Something about SAT

The SAT is a standardized test used for college admissions in most of the institutions in the United States, and in many other countries as well. SAT originally stood for "Scholastic Aptitude Test," but it is now generally known only by its acronym (SAT). It was started in the year 1926 and underwent regular amendments and changes to its name as well till date. The SAT is owned and conducted by the College Board, a non-profit organization founded in 1900 for the purpose of increasing access to higher education. The SAT was created to replace and standardize earlier admissions practices in which each university had its own admissions exam. The test is conducted seven times every year in the month of October, November, December, January, March (or April alternating), May and June at the worldwide level. There are two subparts of SAT i.e. SAT 1 simply known as SAT and SAT 2 which is generally known as SAT subject tests. SAT subject tests are conducted six times in a year. You can only give one, two or three subject tests on whichever of the test dates.

 

SAT SYLLABUS

The macro-level organizational scheme of the SAT includes what the College Board refers to as "sections" and "tests." The SAT is divided into two large sections that are called "Evidence-Based Reading and Writing" and "Math." Each of these sections is scored from 200 to 800, for a total score of 400-1600. There are three total tests within these sections: Reading (for which students are given 65 minutes), Writing and Language (35 minutes), and Math (80 minutes). The essay test is optional and scored separately, on a 2-8 point scale in each of three areas: Reading, Analysis, and Writing. Students are given 50 minutes to complete the essay. There are 52 questions in reading the section, 44 in writing and 58 in math. Whereas on the other hand SAT Subject Tests are the only national admission tests that give you the opportunity to show hold of content in the specific subjects such as English, history, mathematics, science (Physics, Chemistry and biology (E/M)), foreign languages and various other subjects.

SAT SCORE

The Scoring system is based on the scale of 200 – 800 (in 10- points increments) on each of the substituent sections (total of 400- 1600). However, the essay is scored on a scale of 0 -24, in 1- point increment order. The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section includes a Reading Test and a Writing and Language Test, and students will receive a score on each of 10 to 40. The Math section consists only of a Math Test, which is similarly scored from 10 to 40. And for each of the subject test duration of an hour is provided. All the questions are of multiple choices. Additionally, the scores will be provided on a scale of 200-800.

 

 

NEW SAT CHANGES

Ever since the SAT was introduced in 1926, The College Board has been adjusting it to ensure the test evaluates student aptitude as accurately as possible. In 2016, they again announced major changes to the test, especially to the essay portion. Here are some changes-

The essay is now optional: If you have been dreading the essay portion of the test, you’ll be happy to hear that it is no longer compulsory. If you do decide to take the essay, you’ll have to pay an extra $11.50 to register for the test. It will also take you about an hour longer to complete.

The essay time limit is longer: Earlier students were given 25 minutes for essay writing but now it has been doubled i.e. now they have 50 minutes for essay writing; now students will have more time to analyze, work and make corrections.

The focus is now on analyzing the passage, not agreeing or disagreeing: The new essay is more standardized. This means that instead of writing a personal essay for the writing section, students taking the new SAT will be asked to read a passage and then explain how the author is persuading the audience.

Guessing penalty: No guessing penalty will be there.
