SAT Score Range and Percentiles in EBRW & Math I

A lot of Indian/NRI students do not really understand the SAT score percentiles.

They must have clear understanding of them in order to maximize your study time, find about best score gains and accomplish their dream of getting into their favorite college.

Understanding SAT Score Range & Percentiles

Apart from the composite SAT score which is between 400 and 1600, the student is also given the percentile ranking which ranges from 1 to 99. Percentile ranking is given for both the sections- Math and Evidence Based Reading and Writing.

The percentile actually reveals how you fared in SAT exam in comparison with everyone else who took the exam. For instance, if you scored composite percentile of 76, this connotes that you scored more than 76% of the students who appeared for the exam. In case you get percentile of 52 in Math sections, this means you performed better than 47% students who appeared for SAT Math exam.

Percentile score is not like grades. It just shows comparison with other students who are appearing for the exam. When you pay attention to the percentile ranking along with the composite score it will offer you a clear idea of your performance and what strategies should you adopt in order to get admission in the best of colleges.

SAT Score and Percentile Ranges

College Board comes up with data as regards composite scores and matching percentile rankings so that student knows how to go about things.

It has been observed that percentiles scores change quite fast at level of middle scores. Between 1400 and 1600 there is just 3 percentile point difference but between 1100 and 1250 there is huge percentile difference (i.e.58-81).

This means that in case you score 1100 or less, increasing your composite by just 150 will lead to huge volume of difference in your percentile rank and your chances of getting admission wherever you want. Now, isn’t this a cool strategy?

How Understanding the SAT Percentile Helps You?

We all know that a minor increase in composite score will have a very big impact on your percentile rankings. A lot of schools have score ranges which do not change. Check the score ranges of the school you wish to apply and proceed accordingly.

SAT percentile rankings help Indian/NRI students decide whether or not they should retake SAT.

For instance difference between 700 in math and 600 in EBRW does not look huge. But for math the score is at 94th percentile and for EBRW it is at 75th percentile. This is a big difference. But now you know where to focus. You gain more if you do well in EBRW so you should place more priority on it.
