Tips to write LOR
Letter of Recommendation (LOR) and Statement of Purpose (SOP) are two of the most important documents required while applying for admissions in Universities and Colleges. Nearly all Universities and Colleges require Letter of Recommendation (LOR) and Statement of Purpose (SOP) from previous academic institutions.
Here we will discuss some of the important tips to follow while writing LOR.
Tips for Writing LOR
1. Be Selective: First things first: Before writing a Letter of Recommendation, make sure that you know the candidate well enough to speak about him for the program applied for. It is always assumed that the person writing LOR has worked with or supervised the candidate in the academic setting. Write a LOR only when you are confident enough to write something unique and best for it.
2. Compose a Relevant Letter: In order to ensure that you write an effective LOR, follow below tips
A. Enlist the Applicant’s Help – It could be the case that you know the candidate very well but you might need some information from him to write the best LOR, so ask for the information from him. Ask for a copy of resume or supporting materials to write most effective LOR.
B. Mention a Candidate’s Best Trait – In order to write an effective and impressive LOR, mention the best and unique traits of the candidate apart from education and experience and make sure to provide sufficient examples to support your recommendation. Do mention any particular obstacle or situation that the candidate has gone through and how he overcame that situation. Remember, admission committee has to go through a large number of applications and they would consider only those with a unique and impressive recommendation.
C. Watch Your Language – Keep you language crisp and simple without using flowery language. Be detailed while describing a candidate and quote solid examples to emphasize his traits. Since the admission committee has to go through the number of applications so make sure to write a crisp and short LOR. Try to keep the length of content limited to one page only.
D. Write About the Applicant as a Whole – Emphasize and talk about the candidate as a whole. State about his behaviour towards society, his personality and reasons why he should be a possession for the university apart from his educational experience. Details like this really help the admission committee to understand the candidate in a better way and makes it easier for them to decide on candidate’s admission.
3. Revise & Proofread: Now that you are done writing your LOR, then don’t forget to revise and proofread your content for any grammatical or typographical error. Prefer to draft a typewritten content instead of a handwritten one. If possible, use your school or college’s letterhead.
4. Contact Details: Don’t forget to mention your contact details and current designation along with your signature so that you can easily be contacted for the future reference.
5. Deadlines: Ensure to double check the LOR deadline and submission guidelines and complete your LOR days before it to avoid any last minute hassle.
6. Inform the Candidate: Once you have submitted the LOR, inform the candidate for the same and wish him the best for the future.
