Tips To Write SOP For College Admission

Tips to write SOP

Letter of Recommendation (LOR) and Statement of Purpose (SOP) are two of the most important documents required while applying for admissions in Universities and Colleges. Nearly all Universities and Colleges require Letter of Recommendation (LOR) and Statement of Purpose (SOP) from previous academic institutions.

Here we will discuss some of the important tips to follow while writing SOP and LOR.

Tips to Write SOP:

1. Follow Directions: You should always follow directions in the same way as you would expect from your students in front of the admission committee.

2. Consider Your Audience: Don’t forget that your audience would be the admission committee. As they have to go through numerous SOPs so they can easily sense formulaic writing but would love to read something really unique.

3. Demonstrate Interest in the School: Possibilities are that you would apply to multiple universities or colleges for which you would write a general SOP and modify according to the individual application. But the key to well-written SOP is that do your homework on every institution that you have applied to. Make your audience feel that this is this is the only university where you want to take admission.

4. Write a Draft: Start writing your SOP days before the given deadline and write at least one initial draft.

5. Choose Your Angle Carefully: Write your SOP to present your angle for taking admission in the university. It should differentiate you from other candidates.

6. Find deeper meaning as you write: You should start writing (and keep writing) before knowing exactly what to write. Start putting your thoughts down on paper, and you may see patterns and deeper meaning begin to emerge.

7. Be Clear and Concise: Be clear and concise while writing your SOP. Your language should be simple and should not exceed the length of a page.

8. Revise: The next step after drafting is revising. And revision means more than running spell check. It gives you time so that you really have time to polish your draft and present before the admission committee a well-written SOP.

9. Proofread: Once you are done writing your draft then proofread for any grammatical or spelling error. Proofread for any such error and draft a well-written SOP.

10. Have Someone Review It: After writing your draft, get someone to review it. Be open to suggestions and polish your draft accordingly to write a well-written SOP.
