What do 4 SAT Sections Test in an Applicant? How to Deal with them?
Before you sit for any exam, it is important to know its basic structure so that you are aware as what skills are required in order to get a good score. SAT exam is one of the most sought after exams which determine Indian (NRI) student college admissions.
The SAT exam has four key sections:
- Reading
- Writing and Language
- Math (It has two sub sections, Using calculator, without use of calculator)
- Essay (Optional part of the exam)
The prime motive of your SAT exam is determining your readiness for a college. Each of the sections of the exam appears just once. Each section has fixed number of question which needs to be answered in a stipulated span of time.
Math section of SAT exam is longest both in reference to number of questions which are asked and time. No Calculator section has just 20 questions which are to be attempted in span of 25 minutes. Calculator section encompasses 38 questions and it lasts for 55 minutes.

- This section focuses on Reading comprehension skills and Vocabulary skills of a student
- There are five passages in all
- 1 passage is on World or US literature
- 2 passages pertain to Social Studies/ History
- 2 passages are about Science
- You might encounter Charts, Graphs and other kinds of data representation
The skills which are checked in this exam are command of evidence and understanding of words with reference to their context.

Get to Know About SAT Math Section
This section evaluates the problem solving ability of a student. It has both practical and real world Math questions. There are two sub-sections:
- Math Calculator
- Math No- Calculator
This is the only part of the exam which contains non multiple choice questions known as grid-in. In fact.22% of SAT Math questions are grid-ins.
The concepts for which the student is tested are Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Heart of Algebra, Passport to Advanced Math and Additional Topics in Math.
SAT Writing and Language Question Section
This section is usually just referred as ‘Writing Section’. It evaluates ability of students to identify and make right the grammatical errors as well as stylistic weaknesses in a passage. So in short the editing and proofreading skills of a student are evaluated with help of this section.
All the passages which are provided in this section are non-fiction. The student has to rectify the errors or leave the sentence as it is in case there are no errors.
Get to Know About SAT Essay
This is the optional part of the SAT exam. The student can choose whether he wants to go for it or not. The score of this part is separate from composite SAT score.
This is basically a writing based section where the student has to first read a passage of up to 750 words and then write an essay which analyses how author builds up his or her argument or how persuasive is the argument. The student is not required to tell whether he or she agrees with the author or not. Whether you appear for this part of the exam or not is entirely your own wish.
