What is an SAT Super Score? What Colleges Require Them?

Superscore & What Colleges Require SAT Superscore

Aiming to take the SAT and worried about the Evidence-Based Reading & Writing or Math section??

Or

Indian/NRI students have been taking the SAT for the past year, made 2-3 successive attempts and exhausted as you’re unable to get the high score on the SAT???

Not to worry now.

TestprepKart takes you through the “SAT Super Score” tactic, which helps you to onboard one of the highly selective colleges in the United States.

Let’s see what’s an SAT Super Score?

What is an SAT Super Score?

It’s an element of testing policy, where colleges consider your maximum test score on a particular section regardless of the test date and the number of attempts.

Say that you attempted 3 SAT tests.

On Test 1, you scored 500 in the Evidence Based Reading & Writing (EBRW) section and 730 in the Math test. That is, your maximum test score is 730, in Maths.

On Test 2, you scored 740 in the Evidence Based Reading & Writing section and 450 in the Math section. That is, your maximum test score is 740, in EBRW section.

Now, see how SAT Superscore works. Superscore adds up all your highest scores in the two SAT tests. That is, 730 in Maths and 740 in Evidence-Based Reading & Writing. Now your SAT Superscore is 1470 which is the composite score. Let us illustrate it below:

Section

Test 1

Test 2

Composite Score

Evidence Based Reading & Writing

500

740

1240

Maths

730

450

1180

Superscore

730

740

1470

This Superscore testing policy takes off stress and perfectly works in your favour. Let’s elucidate how to take advantage of it.

You could swot and focus entirely on Maths in one test, Evidence Based Reading & Writing in the second test. That is, building up your tests scores section by section will help you to get strong SAT scores for your college applications. We still recommend you to take every test seriously and don’t completely quit a section. If the colleges address very low score in other sections, they might deny your application. Make this strategy in a thoughtful way and ensure your dream college offers this testing policy of Superscoring the SAT.

List of Colleges That Superscore the SAT

Most popular colleges consider the Superscoring policy of SAT. Some colleges don’t publicize them and encourage you to send all the test scores. Prior choosing the Superscore strategy, ensure you have thoroughly researched and listed out the colleges that Superscore your SAT scores.

Some renowned colleges that Superscore the SAT are Boston College, Boston University, Columbia, Georgetown, Harvard, John Hopkins, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Chicago and University of Connecticut.

If you couldn’t address neither “Superscore policy” nor “Send all test scores,” you can send your deliberate score reports to your colleges avoiding the tests with low scores by considering the “Score Choice” feature.

TestprepKart has made an astounding list of colleges that Superscore the SAT. The list is as follows:

College

Colleges Superscore Testing Policy

Admissions Site

Boston College

Boston would like to receive all the test scores if you’ve taken SAT more than once. We’ll collect and add up the highest individual sections scores from each test date.

BC Admissions

Boston University

Boston encourages students to choose Score Choice option. We strongly recommend you to send all your test scores and always choose the highest individual section scores from each test date and we will continue the same.

BU Admissions

Brown University

You are welcome to take advantage of the College Board's Score Choice option, but this may delay your scores being received by Brown — a delay may mean we will not read your application until we receive a full set of official test scores.

Brown Admissions

Columbia University

If you take an exam more than once, you will be evaluated on the highest score you received in any individual section.

Columbia Admissions

Duke University

Students who have taken multiple tests may choose which scores to send to Duke. For students who elect to send multiple test scores Duke will use whichever score is highest.

Duke Admissions

Georgetown University

Georgetown University does not participate in the Score Choice option available through the College Board. Georgetown requires that you submit scores from all test sittings of the SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject Tests.

If an applicant takes the SAT more than once, the admissions committees will consider the highest critical reading score and the highest math score from multiple test sessions when reviewing the application.

Georgetown Admissions

Georgia Institute of Technology

We super score within the same test, using your highest section scores from any test date. Each time you submit new scores to us, we will update your record with your highest scores. We evaluate all your sub-section scores, not just the sum or composite.

Georgia Tech Admissions

Harvard University

You are free to use the College Board Score Choice option

Harvard Admissions

John Hopkins University

We’ll consider your highest section scores across all SATs taken—even if they were on different test dates—in our evaluation of your application. We therefore encourage you to update your application with new test scores each time you take the SATs.

John Hopkins Admissions

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

If you take the same test (SAT, ACT, or an SAT Subject Test) multiple times, we will consider the highest score achieved in each section. This superscoring also applies to students who submit scores from both the "old" and "new" SAT. We do this in order to consider all applicants in their best light.

Students are free to use the College Board's Score Choice option and the ACT's option to submit the scores of your choice as well.

MIT Admissions

New York University

If you’ve taken the SAT more than once, you can select which results you want to send to us using Score Choice. We will review the highest SAT scores you submit. If you submit scores from the old and new versions of the SAT, however, we will not create a new “superscore” as the old SAT is a different test from the new SAT.

NYU Admissions

Notre Dame University

If you submit multiple scores, we will superscore the tests for our evaluation. This means we will consider the highest composite score and highest scores on each section, regardless of test date. Note that we do not require the writing portion of the ACT

ND Admissions

Princeton University

We allow applicants to use the score choice feature of both the SAT and ACT.

Princeton Admissions

Stanford University

We want you to have the best test representation possible, and we will superscore your results according to the following rubric: For the SAT, we will focus on the highest individual Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, Math, and Essay scores from all test sittings. For SAT exams taken prior to March 2016, we will focus on the highest Critical Reading, Math and Writing scores. Because we are not able to superscore across the two exams, we will superscore results within the old and new SAT exams separately.

Stanford Admissions

University of Chicago

We superscore both the SAT and ACT, meaning that if you take either test multiple times, we will take your highest individual sub-section scores and combine them to give you the highest overall score possible.

UChicago Admissions

University of Connecticut

We will combine the highest scores from each subsection of an exam to create the best overall score (within same exam formats) for exams taken more than once.

UConnec Admissions

University of Miami

If you take the test more than once, please ensure that the testing agency sends all of your scores so that we have your best performance on record. The Admission Committee will consider all official test scores from multiple test dates. We will use the highest composite score from among each test that you’ve taken. There is no limit to the number of test scores you may submit to us for your application.

UMiami Admissions

University of North Carolina

If you send us scores from multiple test dates, we’ll take your highest score for each section of the test and consider those scores as we evaluate your application. Please note that we will not be able to combine your highest scores from different versions of the SAT (new SAT and old SAT).

UNCarolina Admissions

University of Southern California

For students who take the SAT more than once, USC records the highest scores for each section — critical reading, mathematics and writing — even if achieved in different sittings. For students taking the ACT, USC will record the highest composite score.

USCalifornia Admissions

University of Virginia

It has been the Office of Admission’s long-standing policy to consider the best test scores submitted by applicants. When reviewing SAT scores, we use the top score from each section across all administrations of the same exam. Scores from the previous version of the SAT and the current SAT will not be combined.

We hope you will submit all of your scores knowing that we will recombine the sections to get the best possible set of scores.

UVirginia Admissions

Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt strongly encourages students to submit scores each time they take the SAT.

Vanderbilt will super-score among Old SAT tests and among New SAT tests, but will not super-score between the Old SAT and the New SAT.

Only the highest section scores for either the Old SAT or the New SAT will be considered as part of the admissions review process.

Each time SAT scores are submitted, the student's record is updated with the new high section scores.

Vanderbilt Admissions

Villanova

Candidates are asked to submit their scores from each sitting of the SAT and/or the ACT understanding that the Admission Committee will superscore the highest Evidence-based Reading and Writing scores and Math scores from the SAT.

Villanova does not require the optional writing section on either the SAT or ACT.

Villanova Admissions

Virginia Tech

At Virginia Tech, we superscore across test dates AND across exams – meaning we’ll look at your highest Math and English subscores and even combine scores from the SAT and ACT. For example, the Committee could consider your SAT Math and ACT English subscores when reviewing his/her application.

VTech Admissions

Yale University

Applicants who have taken the SAT or ACT exam multiple times should report all scores from whichever test they choose to report. Applicants who choose to report scores from both the SAT and ACT should report all scores received on both tests. If space in the testing section of the application is insufficient, applicants may use the "additional information" section to self-report additional test scores.

When assessing SAT results, admissions officers will focus on the highest individual section scores from all test dates. For example, if an applicant took the SAT twice, the highest Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math scores will be considered individually.
