When Should I Start Preparing for the SAT? – 10th, 11th or 12th?

Earlier the better the simple answer to this complex question. The best foot forward in SAT arena could start as early as the 10th standard in the Indian context. If you are an Indian (NRI) and aspiring for a seat in the prestigious UG course in the US. You need to work pretty hard and that takes time. Just mugging up may not help to score high in SAT I and SAT II but a systematic preparation. Constant revision and actual working out of the syllabus is the key to success.

Perfect Timing

The perfect time to start the preparation for the SAT depends mainly on the time frame you want to write the SAT. Indians (NRIs) could appear first in the fall, and subsequently write the improvement test in case you want to in spring is an ideal schedule. It also depends on the number of hours you can put in. your comfort zone could be ten hours a week. Two months or four hours a week for five months or whatever bests you can. Putting too much pressure on yourself is also not recommended as the output will not be the best.

Some schools offer SAT preparation if not you can always do the simulated test online, or better still you could join a coaching center. A simulated test shall tell you where you stand and tell you the extra effort called for in scoring better. 

Also if you are looking into admission to prestigious institutions like Harvard, Stanford, or MIT your efforts should go up manifolds as these colleges demand very high SAT scores.

 

Language

You should put in many hours to master the language test, especially the reading. Besides English, two history and social science passages are to be covered. Your vocabulary should also be improved to the SAT standard.

 

Maths

SAT Math tests essentially have the following :

  • Numbers and Operations
  • Algebra and Functions
  • Geometry and Measurement
  • Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability
  • Trigonometry

 

When to Start SAT Preparation?

Possibly 9th Grade would be too early for an Indian (NRI) student to start SAT preparation. That boils down to the next step.

Yes, 10th Grade would be the right time to start.

In the 11th Grade, you would be more mature to meet the challenges of competitive examinations. Even though you will be busy with your high school routines, the 11th standard is the right time for you should give the SAT a try. That is true in case you can spare say 3 hours per day.
